How To Use Cacao

Cacao can be used as both a ceremonial healing aid as well as a regular part of your diet.

When is the best time to drink cacao?

Many will drink cacao as part of or just after breakfast in order to set you up for the day with energy and inspiration. I usually like mine just after lunch, which allows me to take some time out after a busy morning, to sit and be present with the cacao energy. I would generally not recommend drinking cacao after 3pm in order to avoid feeling a little too awake before bed.

Preparing your cacao drink

Traditionally 100% pure cacao is mixed with hot water and spices and served with thick layers of foam. However, it is also very common to make cacao with non-dairy milk in order to make it a little easier on the palette!

You should aim to use 20g of grated cacao for 1 cup, however, for deep ceremonial practices 40g of cacao if often used.

Follow these steps:

  1. Using a regular cup or mug that you’d use for tea, fill half the cup with oat milk and top up with water (you can also use soy, or almond milk if preferred)

  2. Pour the contents of your cup into a small saucepan and gently heat

  3. Add your preferred flavouring- I love mine with a sprinkle of nutmeg and a dash of cinnamon

  4. Add 20g of finely chopped or grated cacao and gently heat for 2-3 mins, occasionally stirring with a fork until the cacao is melted

  5. Pour the contents of the saucepan back into your cup and allow to cool.

Other common flavouring options are:

  • Cardamom, ginger, turmeric, vanilla, anise, or coconut oil

  • Cayenne pepper or chilli can also be used if you like a bit of a kick- this mixture also increases the effect of cacao

Set your intention before enjoying your drink

Even when part of your regular diet and not for ceremonial use, remember to treat cacao with love each time you drink it! The best way to do this is to get into the habit of setting your intention before you drink, or just simply paying gratitude to the cacao goddess and giving thanks for all that you have. I always take a few minutes to do this before I drink my cacao.

What happens when you drink cacao?

For some people the effect is only very mild, whereas for others you will feel a heart-opening feeling of inspiration and love. I believe the benefits of cacao are best built up over time as part of your normal diet. If you drink cacao at least 3 times a week, you will soon begin to notice the benefits. You will feel more present in your body and mind, more energised towards your goals, and generally more open to feelings of love and joy!

Cacao can make you feel a little dehydrated so I would advise drinking water as well- but then drinking water throughout the day is something we should be doing anyway :-)

Love & light to you x
